"methodHTML": "
Growth is real GDP, annual percent change, as published by the IMF (World Economic Outlook, April 2026), on the IMF's reporting basis: calendar year, except the \u2020 fiscal-year economies noted under the table. 2026 is an IMF projection and 2025 values may be IMF estimates where national data are not final. Vintage note: the IMF's July 2026 Update revised some 2026 projections (China 4.6%, India 6.4%, Thailand 1.9%, Vietnam 7.5%); this table preserves a frozen April 2026 comparison rather than mixing vintages. The full October 2026 WEO dataset is now available; reconciliation of this country/peer table is still open, so this is not the latest IMF table. Sri Lanka: 2024 from the same IMF database; 2025 from CBSL National Accounts Estimates 2025 (5.0%, provisional); the IMF database has no Sri Lanka figure for 2025 or 2026 in this vintage, so no 2026 value is shown. Quarterly and annual growth are never mixed in this table. GDP per capita is current US$ (IMF WEO April 2026; Sri Lanka US$5,003 from CBSL).

Peer rule (mechanical, so the list is not hand-picked), using three sources: region from the World Bank country classification (South Asia or East Asia and Pacific); population (at least 5 million) and 2025 GDP per capita from the IMF World Economic Outlook, April 2026; and Sri Lanka's own US$5,003 per capita from CBSL, because the IMF database has no Sri Lanka figure (World Bank data show US$5,002). The band is half to double that figure (US$2,500 to US$10,000). That gives 8: Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam. Neighbours are shown separately: India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Maldives. Pakistan and Nepal (below the band), China (above it) and Maldives (population under 5 million) are neighbours only. World Bank FY27 income groups (effective 1 July 2026) put Sri Lanka in upper-middle income; per-capita income is used as the closer test of similarity. The median is a simple median of the peers' growth, not GDP-weighted.

Sources: IMF DataMapper, WEO April 2026, real GDP growth; IMF WEO April 2026 statistical appendix (Table F, fiscal years); IMF DataMapper, GDP per capita; CBSL National Accounts 2025; World Bank country classifications (FY27); SLTDA Monthly Arrivals, August 2026; CBSL External Sector Performance, December 2025; Sri Lanka Export Development Board; China NBS PMI, 30 Sep 2026; India MoSPI Q1 GDP via PIB; RBI MPC minutes, 19 Aug 2026.
